    Ow.
You know they say that most people regularly break their smallest toe without knowing it? Well, I think I broke mine last night and I definitely felt it!

I'd dozed off in front of my computer due to a couple of late nights. I half-woke up and went to get up to go to bed, and as I did so my left leg sort of collapsed under me for some reason, bending my toe painfully and banging my knee heavily against my machine's tower. Excruciating pain in my left little toe followed, and as it's still painful this morning I suspect that I've actually fractured it.

That's the first fracture I've ever had, knowingly at least.

Anyway, I've got to go and help out my family with IT problems, then go and assist my dad's next-door-neighbour with his new computer. Sigh. I do somewhat resent having to spend a chunk of my weekend essentially working. Presuming I can drive with a painful left foot - getting a sock and shoe on might hurt, too.

Oh well, talk to you later.

    Skimble.

    Better Late Than Never!
Well, it's been almost a year since I last posted an entry... how exactly did that happen?!

Shockingly, having decided that I wanted to post again, I have almost nothing of any significance to remark upon here; I could list the books I've read, but given the time since my last post and the amount I read, that would take quite awhile!

I was just reading back through my previous posts and came to the one on the wish to be famous, to produce or be something that will have a lasting impact on society, which led to me thinking about some weird e-mails I received recently about my webcomic, www.bradthevampire.com

I'll relate the rest of my tale behind an LJ cut...

    Graphology
Well, these are the results of the online graphology test that's going around -

Do you think this sums me up accurately? I think it's pretty good in most particulars, but I'd be curious as to whether the rest of you think it's at all accurate.

You are Form 0, Phoenix: The Eternal.

"And The Phoenix's cycle had reached
zenith, so he consumed himself in fire. He
emerged from his own ashes, to be forever
    immortal."

Some examples of the Phoenix Form are Quetzalcoatl
    (Aztec), Shiva (Indian), and Ra-Atum
    (Egyptian).
The Phoenix is associated with the concept of life,
the number 0, and the element of fire.
His sign is the eclipsed sun.

As a member of Form 0, you are a determined
individual. You tend to keep your sense of
optomism, even through tough times and have a
positive outlook on most situations. You have
a way of looking at going through life as a
journey that you can constantly learn from.
Phoenixes are the best friends to have because
    they cheer people up easily.

    The Skimble Returns
I returned last night from a two week family holiday in Spain: My meandering and most likely boring tales relating to the trip can be read here. ). The short version, for those not interested in reading more, is that the holiday was pretty fun, overall, albeit with a few minor niggly bits that were irritating.

My answers to my new meme
If you had to select a name to suit you perfectly, what name would you choose? Descriptive, Native American-type names are fine.
Hmm, this is a tough one. I might go for something like 'Teller-of-Stories'. I think any answer to this is going to end up sounding slightly pretentious...

What bad habit that others have irritates you the most?
Continually using a word incorrectly even after repeated corrections.

What do you think your own most irritating habit probably is?
    My obsessive pedantry.

What animal would ideally suit you as a pet?
A dragon. Or, more realistically, a cat.

Name one of your favourite authors - and tell us why he or she is a favourite.
Terry Pratchett - because his books are very funny, but they also have a lot to say about the nature of stories and being human.

If you could be a professional at any sport, what would it be and why? ("Ugh, I hate all sports" is acceptable)
Swimming or basketball. I love the water (and the guys in it...) and because I was always fairly good at basketball - and basketball players are kind of cute.

What is your favourite item of clothing and why?
Hmm. A greyish blue roundnecked plain T-shirt that I bought some time ago. It fits nicely and looks fairly good on me, so I often wear it when I go out.

What would you choose as the first sentence of your autobiography?
'The best thing I can say about my life is that it isn't over yet.'

If you woke up one morning to discover you had been endowed with God's omnipotence, what's the first thing you'd do with it?
I think I'd create a beautiful, perfect planet populated with animals and plants and with all the comforts of home in the most wonderful city ever, but with no death or disease. I'd put a doorway from there back into this world that could only be opened by me or by people designated by me, and then I'd invite my friends and family to come and live there with me. I'd pop back to Earth every now and again to invite new people, of course.

If you had to live through the plot of a film as one of the main characters, which film and character would you choose, and why?
I think I'd elect to be Neo, from the Matrix, because he goes through a wonderful journey of discovery and develops amazing abilities.

    New Info Meme
I wonder how easy it is to create a LJ infomeme? You know, one of those items that has a bunch of questions to answer, and which exhorts the user to send it to friends and acquaintances for them to fill it in too... Shall we have a go?

    It's another random all-about-me-meme - or a me-meme if you prefer...
Answer the following questions, then forward it on to your friends and get them to fill it in, too!

    Cult of the Celebrity
I wouldn't really describe myself as an ambitious type; I don't really have much in the way of dreams for the future (with the notable exception of boyfriend-finding aspirations) and fantasies of fame and fortune certainly don't occcur to me very often.

However as I sat eating my lasagne last night my train of thought hit a set of rusty points and drifted down that line, choked with leaves and poorly maintained though it may be.

I imagined actually getting a book written and, furthermore, getting it published. I imagined the jacket photo, a little blurb about the author, being recognised as I wander about and having people come over to speak with me about the book. I wasn't really thinking about the money, more the thrill of having published work out there* and, most of all, the thrill of recognition.

I think this desire for recognition at least partially explains the fascination that people have with celebrities, especially manufactured celebrities such as Big Brother housemates or Pop Idol winners. It's a sort of inversion of the 'there but for the grace of God go I' principle - if these nonentities can become celebrities, perhaps we can, too.

What is it that drives humans to crave recognition?

I think the answer is simply that recognition for our achievements proves that others know we exist, and that furthermore they are glad that we do. This has the effect of affirming our own existence and making us feel more real, somehow.

Perhaps fandom of a celebrity is a symbiotic relationship. The fans bask in his or her reflected glory whilst the celebrity enjoys the affirmation of being adored.

Without celebrities there would be no fans, but without fans there would be no celebrities.

*It's worth noting that I do currently HAVE work published, but it's of somewhat niche interest and, well, I can't really show it to my parents... It was quite a thrill to see the feedback to one of my stories in a magazine, though. And to hold books that contain short stories of mine.

    Mysteries of the familiar
I've just got home from a very pleasant evening, even though I didn't have any company.

I decided on a whim to catch Spiderman 2 at my local (as in, walking-distance) cinema, so I went there after work and bought a ticket for the 8:30 showing. I had a good hour and a half to go before the film, so I went for a little walk around the area next to the cinema.

I've lived here for three years, almost, but I was still totally unfamiliar with the parts I was walking around. Even though I drive past the area every day, I ntoiced different things because I was on foot - like the posters about posture in the window of a chiropractic clinic, two schools, and a bunch of other things. I think it's one of the nice things in life that even the familiar can hold surprises.

I stopped in at one of my favourite pubs in the area for a pint of cider and a lasagne, and to read a few chapters of the book I'm currently reading (Descent) before heading off to the cinmea.

The film was highly enjoyable, although some of the physics were a bit... well, Marvel shall we say? It was interesting to see Alfred Molina as Doc Ock after watching Frida yesterday, another film in which he plays a major role, although to say they were different parts would be something of an understatement.

Technically I have no money and so shouldn't have gone out today, but I had a trying day at work and was distinctly in need of some cheering up - the evening's programme has certainly achieved that!

    Spaced Out
Possibly due to drinking 3/4 of a bottle of white wine, which is unusual for me - was nice though - and watching an arty biopic about Frida Kahlo named.. Frida, whcih is also unusual for me. As well as an episode of Kingdom Hospital, which is less unusual.

I've read a few books recently without bothering to mention them here, naughty me. These have included the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, which is worth noting for being an adventure that for most people wouldn't be an adventure at all. It's saying good things about the quality of the writing that a trip to London by train actually becomes a major task for the protagonist.

I've also read The Player of Games by Iain M Banks, which was very good. Makes me interested in reading more Culture novels - the setting is rather interesting. Am I the only one who thinks Azad sounds vaguely like a CCG combined with a computer RTS?

Also read Manhattan is my Beat by Jeffrey Deaver, a slightly unusual trhiller with some nice little twists, with Deaver trampling all over the reader's assumptions about a few things. Also read The Conspiracy Club by Jonathan Kellerrman, which was good but loses points for the ending being too much like all the rest of his books. Also read A Hat Full of Sky which was bloody excellent, even though it's technically one of Pratchett's kid's books - plenty to think about, I thought. Also read Bag of Bones by Kathy Reichs, which was very good - but again the endings are starting to become a teensy tiny bit simuilar to each other. Also read Star of the Sea, which was a fairly heavy Dickensian/Les Miserables-esque piece about a bunch of emigrees aboard a ship travelling to New York, with lots of hidden pasts and other such. Not quite the murder-mystery cum thriller I was expecting.

Am now reading The Descent - which is... interesting.

Have recently started work on my own novel, working title Night Terrors, but I'm sure that will change. I have a vague plot premise in mind, including a start middle and ending, but knowing me it will mutate a lot en-route. It's been quite hard to start but I think I've got quite a good place to begin now.

    Sigh.
Well, I'm not doing too well so far with this whole 'more excitement' thing. I've just changed vehicles, which is mildly exciting in some respects, I suppose... I'm now driving my Dad's old Citroen Xania LX TD, primarily because it was too expensive to get my car to pass the MOT - 300-odd quid.

Other than that my life is still pretty much entirely routine. Lack of money doesn't help with the whole excitement thing, and I'm also a bit strapped for ideas in some respects. I seriously need to figure out some things to do and people to do them with, before this rut I'm stuck in becomes permanent.

I'm going away to Spain in August which will definitely be something new, I've never roamed that far abroad before, but being that it's a family holiday it'll probably end up being similar in nature to most of the other holidays I've had in the past, although of course the setting will be different.

So the big question is, what should I do that's new?

    Dreams
I've just finished reading Endless Nights - a graphic novel by Neil Gaiman. It features a series of stories about the Endless, accompanied by amazing artwork that was chosen to fit each story.

Reading it, especially '15 portraits of Despair' and the story about Delirium, is like briefly experiencing a shared fever-dream.

Like dreams, some of the tales are open to interpretation, their meaning unclear, but that just makes them more interesting.

Something I've always striven for in my writing is a lyrical feel, similar to Ray Bradbury's tone in 'Dandelion Wine' - poetic prose, rich in subtext and in metaphor, without being to obtuse or flowery.

Perhaps I'll actually write something soon. I haven't even penned an erotic story for months. It irritates me that there are so many ways I'd like to express myself, but I have the time and energy to pursue so few of them.

    Anyway, ciao for now.
